Digital Al-Andalus Film Series

The Digital Al-Andalus Film Forum is a team initiative led by me, Stephanie Amin, as part of the wider ERC project "Digital Al-Andalus: Radical Perspectives Of and Through Al-Andalus", a project based at the School of the Arts and directed by its Principal Investigator Dr. Cristina Moreno-Almeida.
We have created the Digital Al-Andalus Film Forum as a monthly programme featuring films that explore themes such as the relationship between Iberia and North Africa, questions of radicalism, and the use and abuse of historical narratives. Each screening is followed by a conversation on the relevance of these themes today.

Las Llaves de la Memoria

"Las Llaves de la Memoria" [The Keys to Memory] is a 2016 documentary by Jesus Armesto that follows Sophia, a PhD student in modern-day Andalucia who seeks to "uncover" unknown and under-studied areas about the history of this region of Spain shedding light on questions of identity and roots.
The film will be screened in its original language Spanish and accompanied by English subtitles.

El Cid: The Legend

El Cid: The Legend" directed by Jose Pozo is a Spanish-produced animation film released in 2003 which recounts the story of Rodrigo de Vivar, better known as El Cid and his involvement in the Reconquista. The film will be screened in its original language, Castilian with English subtitles and will be followed by a discussion.

Le Destin

Chahine created an historic epic centered on the philosopher Ibn Rushd and set in medieval Cordoba, Spain where – under Arab rule – a secular and multicultural society flourished. Though the film operates as a sincere and moving plea for tolerance and a timely warning against violent religious extremism, Chahine also provides plenty of spectacles, including a steamy romance and lots of song and dance.

Le Destin was preceded by the screening of the short documentary "I Found My Love in Massara" directed by team member, Stephanie Amin.

The screenings were followed with a open discussion with the audience including the board members.
